What's your white rabbit?

My friend Chandan called me yesterday and told me the challenges he faces after he was fired from his job. He was doing well in customer support but laid off in the company's restructuring exercise. Now, he is not getting any calls and hence was quite depressed. I explained to him about so many career choices available these days. Those like video editors, YouTubers, internet marketers, and so, asked him to pick some new skills on the technical and mindset front. He didn't seem excited and went on ranting about all the problems in life, blaming his parents and everyone around him. Is Overconfidence killing your decision-making abilities too?

My friend Binny Brown was one of the most overconfident guys I have seen. He started a service-based IT company in 2015, but his arrogance and overconfidence never allowed him to make the right decisions. He is too much intruding, likes to fire people, never trust any of his employees. However, he called me and said, "I struggle to retain even one trustworthy team member and feels too much pressure. Can you help me?"  I explained to him to take business as a vehicle to achieve his life aspirations instead of running a business like a job and trying to do everything by himself. And importantly, learning how to make decisions by controlling his overconfidence.

Being confident is one thing and being overconfident is another. Researchers have found that those who think intelligence is fixed and unchangeable tend to be overconfident.

"Such people tend to maintain their overconfidence by concentrating on the easy parts of tasks while spending as little time as possible on the hard parts of tasks," said Joyce Ehrlinger from Washington State University in the US.

Overconfidence leads people to make bad decisions and to miss out on opportunities to learn.

Thank You!

N.b. - For Binny, the session in the PIM Workshop on "Decision Making Bottlenecks" was life-changing.
